Insanity abounds in the ranks of Yankeeland, as it's been revealed that Mike Myers' roster spot will not be used on Joba Chamberlain.Instead, the roster spot is being given to Scranton closer Jim Brower, according to Peter Abraham. (There are conflicting reports out there from the Post stating that Chamberlain is the one being called up. The Yankee pregame show is about to start, so if they update that it is Chamberlain I'll edit).
Not surprisingly, there are readers over on that blog who want to DFA Brower one day into his call-up. Never let it be said that Yankee fans aren't willing to give new faces a chance...
In 35 games for S/WB this season, Brower has a 4-1 record with 20 saves in 43.2 innings. He's allowed eight earned runs over those games, none of those homeruns, while walking 11 and striking out 40.
Some fans seem to be in an uproar because they feel Brower is being called up in place of Joba Chamberlain. (They've confirmed on YES that Brower is the one who was called up today) Brower has been around, at 34 years old, and no doubt the experience-loving Torre will be happy to have a veteran to work with.
I know a lot of people will be upset by this move, but look at those numbers. Brower is just as deserving as anyone of a shot, and just because Joba is not up now doesn't mean he won't be soon. If Brower performs well over multiple innings, I can see them sending down Karstens and getting him more regular work as a starter until September so they can bring Chamberlain up to the main roster.
More news: Jason Giambi is reportedly "en route" to Toronto, courtesy of Nancy Newman and YES. But he has not been activated. Torre says he will report, put in his work, and they'll see where they are. But Torre made it clear that DH will be the way to go with Giambi when he gets back. That seems to imply Andy Phillips may have to sit a day here and there as they move guys around, but he won't be in danger of permanently losing his 1B spot for the time being.
Interesting changes for the team. We'll have to see how these moves affect the good stretch the team has been on recently and what changes are made from here until the end of the month.
